Garrett Peltonen

Garrett Peltonen, a former professional road cyclist, has a wealth of experience in a variety of endurance sports. His athletic success began early, winning a collegiate Division 1 cycling National Championship while enrolled at UW-Madison. Shortly thereafter, Garrett signed with the Endeavour elite cycling team en route to becoming professional cyclist. His performance and work ethic earned him contracts with the teams Advantage Benefits-Endeavour, Priority Health, Health Net PB Maxxis, and Bissell Professional Cycling. During his cycling career Garrett was able to race internationally and had a variety of successes, including a top ten in a French cup UCI 1.1‚ Trophie des Grimpeurs.

In 2008, Garrett ended his professional cycling career and has since taken up the study of Exercise Science. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Integrative Physiology from University of Colorado-Boulder in 2010. In 2012 he earned a Master’s degree in Health and Exercise Science from Colorado State University where he spent his time investigating adaptations to high intensity sprint interval and ways to improve exercise performance in low oxygen environments. Currently, Garrett is nearing the completion of his PhD in Exercise Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he is exploring blood flow regulation during a variety of physiologic stressors.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Garrett is passionate about ultra-distance cycling and running. He has completed the 2745 mile Tour Divide mountain bike race and has recently found great success running ultra-marathons. Garrett has completed some of the country’s most challenging ultra-marathon races including the Leadville 100 (2x), Western States 100, Big Horn 100, and Superior 100 (2x). This summer he will be running the notoriously difficult Hardrock 100 while returning to the Superior 100 for a third time. He has competed in international ultra-marathons including the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc with plans of returning over-seas for future races.

Garrett’s coaching philosophy is unique in that he has the ability to combine the highest levels of academic expertise in advanced exercise physiology with his own real world athletic experiences.
